  1.  Jungfrau Marathon

Located in Interlaken, Switzerland and taking place on September 13 this race challenges you to race to the top of one the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world. The first 10K is nice and flat, feels like a breeze to run on and allows you to run along the Lake Brienz. Then the ascent begins as you approach the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains. The finishing point is well known for its stunning panoramic views and stands 2,100 meters above sea level.

  1. Patagonian International Marathon

The Torres del Paine National Park in Chile hosts this amazing marathon on September 27. This event is only in its infancy, with this year being its sixth event, but it is already making a huge impact across the world. On your track, you pass luminescent lakes and waterfalls in landscapes similar to those presented on Planet Earth. A tree is also planted for every runner that takes part in the event.

  1. BMW Berlin Marathon

Berlin plays host to its very own marathon on September 28. It is one of the quickest marathons in the world, with the record standing at 2:03:23 and held by Wilson Kipsang of Kenya. The track is flat and holds tight turns, you will be accompanied on your run by some great rock bands as well.

  1. TCS Amsterdam Marathon

Located in Amsterdam (of course) and taking place in October, the marathon flows through one of the best and most loved cities in Europe. Take in the vast amount of scenery and culture as you and 16,000 other runners traverse through an urban and rural course. You both start and finish at the 1929 Olympic Stadium taking in views such as the Amstel River, Vondelpark and the heart of the Rijksmuseum.

  1. TCS New York City Marathon

On November 2 of each year, New York City is taken over by a plethora of runners who are all looking at beating the grueling 26.2-mile marathon through the city of New York. Finishing in the picturesque scenes of Central Park and including more than 50,000 runners, the New York Marathon has become world famous. It is always on the bucket list of any runner and should be completed by any agile marathon runner.

      6. Antarctic Ice Marathon

A marathon that should only be undertaken by the very brave. The Antarctic Ice Marathon takes place on the Union Glacier on November 18 every year. This marathon gives those who are brave enough access to the coldest, windiest and driest experience of them all. 51 men and woman took the challenge last year and wore many layers of clothing in the process. The camaraderies created throughout make the experience so unique and unlike any other.

         7.  Tokyo Marathon February 23 sees the annual World Marathon Majors descend upon Tokyo to race across the city. The temperatures are often low and chilly but the course is quite often flat, flowing through many urban environments. The large numbers of volunteers, known as TEAM SMILE add the enthusiasm created by the 1.6 million spectators. The atmosphere is warm and very welcoming, which is probably why as many as 36,000 people take part in it.

  1. Kilimanjaro Marathon

Don't worry, you will not be hiking to the top of the mountain on this marathon. The world's highest freestanding mountain will be the backdrop to the race's 6,500 runners who decide to undertake the challenge on March 1 each year. The weather is often hot and the sloping nature of the course is difficult for most but the beauty can be seen in the lavish green surroundings and the energy of the local residents that help the racers during their journey.

  1. Boston Marathon

April 20 sees thousands of runners take over Boston each year as they race in the world famous marathon. More than 30,000 runners take to the streets to celebrate one of the world's oldest contested marathons. From the starting point at Hopkington through the Heartbreak Hill and onto the finishing point at Boylston Street, the race is covered in historic sights which have seen thousands of runners pass by them in the years the race has been in existence.

  1. The Great Wall Marathon

Tiajin, China is the location of one of the most famous landmarks in the world, The Great Wall Of China. The world famous wall which was created to keep the Mongols from entering China (sounds strangely familiar) is the setting for this marathon which is truly a once in a lifetime experience. If you think you can tackle the 5,164 steps and the humid environments that May in China presents then this is the race for you. The inclines are intense but the views of the surrounding Chinese countrysides are worth it. Many who have competed say the views of the local villages and their supportive residents are the sights which stay with them for life.
